To commemorate the 100th anniversary of Shinkichi Tajiri's birth (Los Angeles, December 7, 1923 - Baarlo, March 15, 2009), the Van Bommel van Dam Museum is presenting a jubilee exhibition this autumn featuring sculptures, photographs, films, and drawings by the Japanese-American artist.
Thirty years after his last major exhibition at the Van Bommel van Dam Museum, they believe it's time for a unique presentation dedicated to one of the most significant periods in his body of work. The focus of the exhibition is on Tajiri's life and work during the time when Kasteel Scheres in North Limburg Baarlo served as his residence and studio. After many wanderings, he found his home here. The castle was the epicenter of Tajiri and his wife, the visual artist Ferdi's boundless activities, where they could spread their wings and experienced many highlights in their artistic careers, including the creation of the four monumental Wachters for the city bridge in Venlo. A Long Homecoming: A Century of Shinkichi Tajiri offers an insight into life behind these walls – from welding in the workshop to carnival in the courtyard – and teaches you more about the evolution of four themes in Tajiri's oeuvre during this period: Warriors, Knots, Towers, and Machines. The over fifty presented artworks are partly from the museum's own collection and partly on loan. In addition, we are showcasing some works by artist friends who Tajiri regularly received in Baarlo – think of Karel Appel and Dorothy Iannone, for instance – and brightly colored Hortisculptures by Ferdi.
